Dear all,
I got a very kind off-list note about an important typo I made:
I wrote: "since it is not a non-probability sample" , I meant to say *this
is not a probability sample*.
And I got another one myself, I wrote: " self sampling selection bias" it
should have been :* "self selection bias".*
I wrote this note in a haste, and I do apologize for the typos.
And a final note: a larger sample size, in this case, is not only needed
for reducing sampling error, but also for capturing the variation in the
target population. Again, I have not checked the survey itself, but I am
guessing design expertise is not a monolithic entity, therefore different
designers from various design disciplines may answer very differently
(there might be many other sources of variation, such as
educational background, professional vs. academic, so on an so forth), each
of these sub-samples may deserve separate attention, hence the need for a
larger sample size.
I can write pages about surveys, but I guess I need to stop. There are many
excellent books on the subject such as Dillman, Don A., Jolene D. Smyth and
Leah Melani Christian. 2014. Internet, Phone, Mail and Mixed-Mode
Surveys: the Tailored Design, 4th ed. John Wiley Co. Hoboken: NJ.
Designers would find this book very interesting, as Don Dillman is famous
for (among many other things) applying visual design principles (when he
lectures he typically starts with quoting Don Norman) to successfully
reduce non-response and measurement error on the US Census and many other
large scale surveys.
Warm wishes,
ali
