The University of Helsinki, founded in 1640, is one of the world’s leading universities for multidisciplinary research. The university has an international academic community of 40,000 students and staff members. The University of Helsinki offers comprehensive services to its employees, including occupational health care and health insurance, sports facilities, and opportunities for professional development. The International Staff Services office assists employees from abroad with their transition to work and life in Finland.
The Department of Chemistry (http://www.helsinki.fi/kemia/english/) at the Faculty of Science carries out research on chemistry and its applications at an international level and provides academic teaching based on high quality research. The department forms accountability unit operating on an annual budget of 19 million euros and reports 200 person-years per annum. There are 14 professors at the Department.
The research performed in the Molecular Science Laboratory (previously Laboratory of Physical Chemistry) at the Department of Chemistry is of highest international level. The current research areas are laser spectroscopy, photochemistry, gas kinetics, and computational and theoretical chemistry.
The Department of Chemistry invites applications for a
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER
position. Starting date is negotiable. The position will be filled with a 4-month trial period.
The position is available in the reaction kinetics and oxidation chemistry -research group led by Academy Research Fellow Arkke Eskola. While the group has concentrated mainly on experimental research, the open position is for a candidate with significant, proven expertise in computational reaction kinetics, especially in reactive potential energy surface calculations (using Gaussian, Molpro etc.) and in master equation simulations. The objective is a close interaction between experimental and computational research within the group.
The group´s research interests focus on reaction kinetics and oxidation chemistry in gas-phase under low-temperature combustion and atmospheric conditions. The selected candidate is expected to carry out research on the following systems: low-temperature combustion (oxidation) of resonantly-stabilized radicals; unimolecular and bimolecular reactions of stabilized Criegee intermediates.
The candidate is expected to be creative and motivated with a PhD degree in chemistry, physics, or related fields. Proven expertise, by scientific articles, in computational reaction kinetics is required, while practical experience in experimental research is highly appreciated (but not required). Good English language (oral and written) skills are required.
The salary will be in accordance with the University´s salary system (for teaching and research personnel), where level 5 is for a postdoctoral researcher. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance.
For further inquiries regarding the position, please contact Academy Research Fellow Arkke Eskola ([log in to unmask]).
For more information on the research group and publications, see both http://www.helsinki.fi/kemia/fysikaalinen/index.html and https://tuhat.helsinki.fi/portal/en/.
How to apply
Applications should include (1) CV with a list of publications, (2) contact details for two references, (3) a brief description of research experience (1–2 pages), and (4) a copy of a PhD degree certificate.
Please submit your application using the University of Helsinki Recruitment System at https://www.helsinki.fi/en/open-positions/postdoctoral-researcher-reaction-kinetics-and-oxidation-chemistry-research-group. Applicants who are employees of the University of Helsinki are requested to leave their application via the SAP HR portal. The deadline for applications is June 29th, 2018.
