We (Liverpool T2) don't need singularity since we don't run CMS jobs.
Hence we run "bare metal" CentOS7 worker nodes. We get plenty of jobs,
score and mcore.
Getting a "build system" for that was harder than I thought it would be.
For the WN, we needed to integrate everything that was our SL6 Puppet 2
build system into CentOS7 with our newer CentOS7 Puppet 3 build system.
This meant new (or reused from elsewhere) modules for arc, condor,
cvmfs, user creation, VOMS settings, argus integration... For storage,
John tells me it was less hassle because they have professional Puppet
module writers. Coupled with all that were the complexities of the new
operating system (new firewall, new init.d, new file systems, etc...) I
was pretty tired of computers when I got done with it!
There are lots of modules "out there"; and even a few that could be
regarded as "standard". Lukas gave me the list, so he knows best, along
with Alessandra. I have my own set of modules, that do more or less the
same things but in a completely different way! I regret that the
situation is fragmented. We lost the idea of a "standard build" when
Yaim largely went out of use (although Yaim works with the BDII, and the
various standalone functions are still useful in other situations). The
advice I would give would vary depending on what you already have set
up, what version (if any) of puppet you use, whether you have Heira, and
how you use it; whether you need singularity/docker etc. or not etc.
etc. So many variations.
If I had time, I'd focus more on this sort of thing (i.e. standards) but
I'm stuck on my own problems right now.
Cheers,
Ste
