Hello everyone,
I wanted to share a project that you might find interesting.
For those of you in London, I'd be thrilled to see some of you at the
opening 6-8pm 13 July at Furtherfield (https://www.furtherfield.org/).
There'll be a special performance by Steven Levon Ounanian.
Thanks,
Dani

What would it mean to value trees like we value human labour? Would you
like to monetize your social relations? Learn from hostile designs? Take
part in (unwitting) data extractions in exchange for public services?
Examining the way that the boundaries between ‘play’ and ‘labour’ have
become increasingly blurred, this summer, Playbour – Work, Pleasure,
Survival, will transform Furtherfield into an immersive environment
comprising a series of games. Visitors are asked to become "players" and
test the operations of the real-world, and, in the process, experience how
forms of play and labour feed mechanisms of work, pleasure, and survival.
Systemic control of public access is increasingly altering how we use,
experience, and perceive public space. In response to a lack of public
services in the park, *Public Toilet* (Arjun Harrison-Mann & Benjamin
Redgrove), sees Furtherfield gallery transform into a part-time gallery and
part-time public toilet. The work sits on the line between provocation and
service, attempting to highlight, challenge and subvert the relationship
between arbitrary metrics, technological governance and freedom of access.
Feminist Economics Yoga (FEY) (Cassie Thornton, The Feminist Economics
Department (FED)) is a long-term project by Cassie Thornton where she
combines feminist economics and kundalini yoga to support people as they
heal their social and economic wounds before they can imagine a future that
isn’t so hard to survive in. The combination of political ideas with
physical practice is to use an ancient social technology (yoga) to uproot
the internalized collective values associated with capitalism, which may
have entered us deeper than just our wallets.
In 2010, the Government introduced the Hostile Environment, a set of
policies reducing undocumented people in the UK’s access to healthcare,
bank accounts, education, and even driver’s licenses. The aim of these
measures is to make staying in the country as difficult as possible. We
truly believe that everyone should have the opportunity to create their own
hostile environments. As a preparation, in Hostile Environment Facility
Training (HEFT) (Michael Straeubig), you will have to complete a short,
free Hostile Environment Facility Training, following the instructions
provided.
Trees work hard. They make the air breathable, beautify the landscape and
provide living space for wildlife. What would it mean to value this
treebour like we value human labour? Treebour (Marija Bozinovska Jones with
Robert Gallagher) does just this. Giving a human voice to three treebourer and
demeaning that they prove their worth, it highlights the insidious logic of
‘gamified’work and critiques our compulsion to anthropomorphise other
species.
