Broadcasting, Press and the Internet in Britain - Eight Edition
University of Westminster
WEDNESDAY, JULY 4
309 Regent Street, London W1B 2HW
Boardroom
6:00pm to 8:00pm
This event will launch the eight edition of James Curran and Jean
Seaton's "Power Without Responsibility: Broadcasting, Press and The
Internet in Britain".
The book, which has six new chapters and much new original research
material throughout, has been in continuous publication since 1981.
It has been translated into five languages, copied in many nations and
is seen as an iconic and founding text in analysing the media. It put
the history of the press and broadcasting and communications at the
heart of understanding and policy reccomendations.
Hugh Grant - fresh from playing Jeremy Thorpe in the BBC One drama, A
Very English Scandal - will introduce the event - speaking about the
press in Britain.
There will also be an auction of the original cartoon for the cover by
Martin Rowson, the distinguished cartoonist who drew the image. Rowson
is also a University of Westminster Honorary Fellow. He will conduct the
auction with Lord Carter which will raise funds for the Winter Shelter
for the Homeless at St James's Piccadilly - who Seaton and the Orwell
Foundation have been working with for the recent dramatisation of
Orwell's Down and Out In Paris and London.
Professor James Curran, now at Goldsmiths, University of London, was one
of the founding members not only of Westminster's media department but
also of the tradition - the Westminster School - of practical policy
engagement. He has written and edited more than 20 important books on
the media. He has been visiting Professor at the University of
California, Oslo, Pennsylania, Stanford, and Stockholm. He is
internationally recognised as an influential media theorist and campaigner.
Professor Jean Seaton - as the Director of the Orwell Foundation - has
created pioneering ways of highlighting media issues and intervening in
policy and public debates. The Foundation runs the most prestigous
prizes for political writing and journalism, great public lectures and
other events. It has recently read 1984 LIVE. She is co-director, with
Professor Rosie Thomas, of the pioneering and unique FCO Chevening South
Asian Journalists Programme at Westminster. She has written a volume in
the Official History of the BBC, titled Pinkoes and Traitors: the BBC
and the Nation 1974-87.
