Where pattern meets chaos is a space where conventional subject boundaries become re-aligned and inter-disciplinary is a given. This symposium aims to inform current practices and critical positions in art and design through a focus on processes which address relationships between pattern and chaos. Such dialogues might be envisaged as real and/or imaginary, as science and/or art, as messy and/or composed; what matters is their effect in developing innovative forms of materialization and/or provoking new ways of knowing.
Confirmed speakers:
Charlotte Higgins, Guardian chief culture writer editorial board member (keynote speaker)
Dr Peter Lovatt, Dance Psychologist, Reader in Psychology, University of Hertfordshire (keynote speaker)
Dr Veronika Kapsali, Reader in Materials Technology and Design, London College of Fashion
Jonathan Keep, Potter, keep-art.co.uk
Danica Maier, Associate Professor in Fine Art, Nottingham Trent University
Zoë Mendelson, Pathway Leader for BA Fine Art Painting at Wimbledon College of Arts, University of the Arts London
Further details of speakers, events, registration and schedule will be published as soon as they are available.
Research Market Place
To accompany the symposium there will be table-based or panel-mounted displays of work aligned to our theme of ‘Beyond Pattern and Chaos’. In the spirit of the symposium there will be a range of proposals including artefacts and/or images that encompass art, design and/or craft practices relating to this theme. We wish to encourage as broad a range of responses as possible. Selected researchers will be allocated space in the foyer of our Duke Street building. Over an extended lunch period there will be an opportunity to discuss the research with “market browsing” delegates.
