BOROUGH GALLERY
BOROUGH ROAD,
LONDON SE1 0AA
WEDNESDAY 11TH JULY 2018 5-8pm
Desrie Thomson-George, is a UK based visual artist, the Chair of Black Ink Legacy and Co-Founder of Black Ink Collective (1978-1987), the independent publishers which provided a platform for young Black Britons to write and be published. She has designed and produced children's books and illustrations and created magazines including No Limits for girls (1997) and the first national Black History Month magazine - BHM Magazine (1999).
The artist’s collection of life-size sculptures and installation is set to be an emotive showcase focusing on art for empowerment to provoke dialogue and affect change. Drawing on her own experience of growing up in the UK, Thomson-George tells the story of her alter ego, Jilo, her struggles and journey to survival. Desrie’s impassioned presentation of Jilo’s invisibility while being visible, and the irony of this is perceptive. 'Liberated' challenges preconceived conceptions and stereotypes of the black woman in the West. The artist works with recycled metal, glass, paper and textiles, sometimes pressed into jesmonite and plaster moulds, to reflect the complexities of Jilo’s experience and who she is.
