I you were using the camera system. What software would you choose to create OCR'd PDF/A? I imagine LIMB and Goobi would be capable. Is there anything else worth considering? I wouldn't worry about colour calibration or processing tools.

I think you are also right that the important part of it would be workflow and software. I've seen most of them in operation over the years, and while impressive, they tend to operate in a way which would make your conservation team wince.
Another thing to consider - with high throughout, you'll the data/workflow infrastructure to support it. At full tilt, you're likely to be creating hundreds of GB a day. In my experience, this is one of the most challenging aspects of mass digitisation. Keep a steady flow through your Scan>QA>OCR>Metadata Creation>Ingest, workflow can be very tricky. As soon as one of the dependant steps falls over, you can quickly find yourself with a 10TB backlog of data to process. Increasing scanning productivity is fairly easy to do - increasing capacity in the rest of the workflow can be more difficult.

But as Scott suggested, this needs to be tested and proven to fit your needs and expectations. Seeing it working I would say it can capture a frame every 6-8 seconds and if you factor in book handling and positioning, page count is likely around 800/ hour.
A single, higher res camera on a flat bench (like the DT Versa) and an operator might give higher overall throughput with fewer holdups and more consistent results.

Hi Maciej,
What are your expectations/requirements in terms of daily throughput?
I would always take the promises of automated book scanner manufacturers
with a pinch of salt. In my experience, their figures are based on very
small sample sizes, and when it comes to real world projects, the
numbers you can realistically expect are significantly lower.
I would also invite a member of your conservation team with you when
reviewing potential machines - if only to keep them in the loop.
I have always favoured multiple (significantly cheaper) manual machines
over single automated ones. We've had several projects with more than a
million pages, and I find it's easier to manage the work and hit
production targets when the risk is spread over multiple machines.
