Really interesting to hear about the alternative approaches. Sounds like the watermark type solution would be good, but perhaps not a 'must have' just yet - not whilst the standard cover sheet does most of what it needs to relatively well.

There is indeed. This paper (Cover Sheets Considered Harmful - Tonkin, Taylor &
Tourte) is the clearest I'm aware of and is worth reading. It's short & well-written.
