Coinciding with the opening of the exhibition "Territories that Matter. Gender, Art and Ecology" on October 18, 2018, at the Centro de Arte y Naturaleza-Fundación Beulas (CDAN) in the city of Huesca (Spain), the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, the CDAN and the Ayuntamiento de Huesca are organizing an international conference with the same title that will take place at the the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and the Huesca Convention Center, on November 23 and 24, 2018, respectively.
The aim of this conference is to explore the intersections between contemporary art, gender issues, and political ecology. Since the 1960s, influenced by Second-Wave Feminism and ecofeminist theories, a great number of artists, specially women artists, have sought to trascend the traditional identification of women with the earth in order to consider, from a larger perspective, the complex interactions between gender politics and environmental issues.
In recent years, artistic practices committed to feminism and the protection of the environment have been enhanced with new contributions: moving beyond the debates of early ecofeminism, feminist political ecologists suggest gender is a crucial variable – in relation to class, race and other relevant dimensions of political ecological life – in constituting access to, control over, and knowledge of natural resources, thus underlining the interconnection between patriarchy, colonialism, capitalism and extractivism. In addition, the new challenges of climate change act as powerful reminder of the social responsibility of the artist and the role of artistic education in promoting environmental ethics, while queer ecology and animal rights movements help us understand the relation between heteronormativity and speciesm.
Territories that matter focuses on a topic which has not been extensively adressed by scholarly literature and museums. Some recent exhibitions have tried to highlight the role of women in Land Art (Decoys, Complexes, and Triggers: Feminism and Land Art in the 1970s,l SculptureCenter, Queens, 2008) and some very interesting reference books on art and ecology have been published over the last few years (Land and Environmental Art, Jeffrey Kastner (ed.), Londres, Phaidon, 1998; Art an Ecology Now, de Andrew Brown, Londres, Thames and Hudson, 2014; or Arte y Ecología, Tonia Raquejo y José María Parreño (eds.), Madrid, UNED, 2015, to cite only a few). However, the particular contributions of women artists and feminist and queer perspectives to these debates need to be further investigated.
You are cordially invited to offer a paper or panel. Proposals for individual papers as well as panels on specific themes (max. four papers per panel) are encouraged. Any proposed panel should be organised by one convenor who will be responsible for inviting the speakers and chairing the session.
The possible themes might include, but are not limited to:
– Women artists in Land Art
– Spirituality, art and nature
– Ecofeminism and art practice
– Queer ecologies
– Feminism, art and global warming
– The care economy and sustainable economy – Post-colonial approaches on art, gender and ecology – Biodiversity, art and invention – Dialogue between art and science – Non-human animals in the art – Anti-speciesism, feminism and art practice – Art and environmental ethics – Art education and environment – New art organizations: platforms, labs and art centers focusing on art and ecology – Art and littering – Post-landscape visions

The CDAN, inaugurated in 2006, is a well-renowned art center focusing on the relationship between art and the environment. The building, constructed by Spanish architect Rafael Moneo, is located nearby the city of Huesca, in the foothills of the Pyrenee mountains. Its collection comprises a series of landscape artworks by Richard Long, Ulrich Rückriem, Siah Armajani, Fernando Casás, David Nash, Alberto Carneiro y Per Kirkeby. After the conference, the curators, Juan Guardiola and Patricia Mayayo, will conduct a guided tour to the exhibition.

Con ocasión de la exposición Territorios que importan. Género, arte y ecología que se inaugurará en el CDAN (Centro de Arte y Naturaleza Fundación Beulas, Huesca) el 18 de octubre de 2018, la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, el CDAN y el Ayuntamiento de Huesca organizan un congreso internacional con el mismo título, que tendrá lugar los días 23 y 24 de noviembre en Madrid y Huesca.
Este congreso pretende explorar la relación entre el arte contemporáneo, la ecología política y las cuestiones de género. Impulsadas/os por la eclosión de la Segunda Ola del movimiento feminista y el surgimiento del ecofeminismo, desde los años setenta numerosos artistas, y más en particular numerosas mujeres artistas, han intentado trascender en su trabajo la asociación tradicional entre la mujer y la naturaleza para investigar, de una forma más amplia, las complejas intersecciones que se establecen entre las políticas e identidades de género y los debates medioambientales.
En los últimos años, las prácticas artísticas comprometidas con el feminismo y la defensa del medio ambiente se han ido enriqueciendo con toda una serie de nuevas aportaciones: la ecología política feminista ha desbordado el marco tradicional del ecofeminismo para abordar la interrelación entre el patriarcado, el capitalismo, el colonialismo y el extractivismo, así como para sugerir alternativas para la despatriarcalización y el posdesarrollo; por otro lado, al tiempo que los retos urgentes planteados por el cambio climático nos recuerdan la importancia de la responsabilidad social del/la artista y el papel de la educación artística en la construcción de una ética ecológica, las reivindicaciones de los movimientos animalistas y el desarrollo de la ecología queer nos ayudan a entender mejor los lazos entre la heteronormatividad, el especismo y el patriarcado.
Territorios que importan aborda un tema aún poco estudiado en la literatura académica y las programaciones de los museos. Si bien disponemos de algunos precedentes como la exposición Decoys, Complexes, and Triggers: Feminism and Land Art in the 1970s (celebrada en el SculptureCenter en Long Island City, Queens, en 2008), que analizaba el papel de las mujeres dentro del Land Art norteamericano, así como un conjunto de monografías y exposiciones dedicadas a analizar en términos generales la relación entre la práctica artística contemporánea y la ecología (Land and Environmental Art, Jeffrey Kastner (ed.), Londres, Phaidon, 1998; Art an Ecology Now, de Andrew Brown, Londres, Thames and Hudson, 2014; o Arte y Ecología, Tonia Raquejo y José María Parreño (eds.), Madrid, UNED, 2015, entre otros), la contribución específica de las mujeres artistas y de las prácticas feministas y queer a estos debates no ha sido todavía analizada en profundidad.
Se invita a presentar comunicaciones así como propuestas de mesas sobre temas concretos (máximo cuatro comunicaciones por mesa). Las mesas contarán con la presencia de un moderador, un que se encargará de presentar a los intervinientes y moderar la sesión.
Sin excluir otras aproximaciones afines, las líneas temáticas sugeridas son las siguientes:
– mujeres artistas en el land art
– espiritualidad, arte y naturaleza
– ecología política feminista y prácticas artísticas contemporáneas – ecologías queer – feminismo, arte y cambio climático – economía de cuidados y sostenibilidad – aproximaciones postcoloniales a la relación entre arte, género y ecología – biodiversidad, arte e invención – diálogo ciencia/arte – animales no humanos en el arte – antiespecismo, feminismo y práctica artística – arte y ética ecológica – educación artística y medio ambiente – nuevas instituciones artísticas: plataformas, laboratorios y centros de investigación artística especializados en la relación entre el arte y la ecología – arte y basuraleza – visiones del pospaisaje

El Centro de Arte y Naturaleza, inaugurado en 2006, es un centro de referencia en Europa especializado en las relaciones entre el arte contemporáneo, la naturaleza y el paisaje. El edificio, diseñado por Rafael Moneo, se halla próximo a la ciudad de Huesca, en las estribaciones del Pirineo aragonés y su coleccción se completa con una serie de intervenciones en el paisaje oscense firmadas por artistas de renombre internacional como Richard Long, Ulrich Rückriem, Siah Armajani, Fernando Casás, David Nash, Alberto Carneiro y Per Kirkeby. Las sesiones del congreso se complementarán con una visita guiada a la exposición por los/as comisarias/os de la muestra, Juan Guardiola y Patricia Mayayo.
