Hello everyone
Last Saturday we had a major event across the city in Exeter to celebrate RAMM's 150th anniversary. This included live streaming on Facebook and in case it's useful here are some things we learnt.
Planning ahead to avoid decision making on the day paid off
Using three iPads as cameras linked to one as a mixer gave great flexibility and different points of view
The mixer app used https://www.switcherstudio.com/ worked well but you need to allow time at the end of each broadcast to save the video to the server
Going through a third party app meant checking at the start of each piece that the app was broadcasting to the RAMM Facebook page and hadn't defaulted to a linked personal profile
Over a seven hour day batteries get drained and having extra power packs is necessary
Going live on Facebook directly is less of a power drain than going through a mixer app
Tripods help with interviews and iPad holders really make a difference with stability on moving shots
We worked with someone from http://shademakersuk.org/ who were also responsible for the carnival elements of the day. For a first try I'd recommend working with someone who's done this before and has all the kit so you can see it working.
Was it worth it? Yes, the video was watched and shared as we hoped. The mix of activities filmed kept interest going and keeping pieces fairly short unless they merited a longer duration worked.
Regards
Rick
