‘Accents’ is an annual conference organized by the Department of English Language and Applied Linguistics at the University of Ùódê, Poland. It brings together researchers and teachers interested in native and non-native accents of English, approached from a variety of theoretical and/or practical perspectives. The key issues discussed each year include individual accent characteristics, the dynamism of accent usage, accent teaching and learning, and the methods and tools for accent studies. ACCENTS 2018 put practice into the foreground. Together with Accents, we go to school to explore pronunciation teaching and learning as elements of instructed language learning across language classrooms.

We invite proposals for papers, workshops and posters related to the main theme ‘accents go to school’ as well as other issues related to native and non-native accents of English, including, but not limited to the ones mentioned below:

- Situated pronunciation instruction: monolingual vs. multilingual classes
- Intelligibility in the EFL/EIL classroom
- L1 in pronunciation instructed learning

Please notice that each author can propose two contributions provided that one of them is co-authored. Papers are given 20 minutes followed by 10 minutes for discussion, workshops will typically have 45/90 minute slots. Please specify the intended presentation format in your proposal.

based until further notice at the Centre for Languages and Literature.
At the department, phonetics as a research subject currently comprises
research in a wide range of areas. Some of this research is conducted in
collaboration with research teams in linguistics and staff within the existing
research infrastructure at the Humanities Lab. The available infrastructure
(at the Humanities Lab) accommodates two Electromagnetic
Articulography-systems, EEG, Eye-tracking-systems, Motion Capture-systems, a
LARM-studio and Swe-Clarin among others. Research collaboration also takes
place with units at other Lund University faculties that offer MR imaging. In
addition, the research activities are linked to other universities within and
outside Sweden.
The professor of phonetics will be expected to take a leading role in research
and third-cycle education in phonetics by developing already established
research environments and research infrastructures. In addition, the professor
will be expected to apply for external research grants and to represent the
subject of phonetics nationally and internationally. Furthermore, the
professor will be expected to supervise doctoral students and teach phonetics
but also other subjects at SOL in the first and second cycles.
The appointment of a professor shall be based on the following assessment
criteria:
- Very good national and international standing as a researcher. The
international qualifications requirement is to be assessed in relation to the
nature and tradition of the subject specialisation.

Postdoctoral Researcher

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in phonetics in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Michigan. The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year. The successful candidate will work 50% of the time in the lab of Professor Jelena Krivokapic and 50% in the lab of Professors Patrice Beddor and Andries Coetzee. Work will involve assisting with all aspects of conducting the experimental studies associated with both labs (participant recruitment, preparing and running experiments, post-processing, analysis, and write-up). Professors Beddor's and Coetzee's research, which is funded in part by an NSF grant, investigates the relation between speech production and perception using ultrasound, airflow, and eye-tracking technologies. The primary responsibility in Professor Krivokapic's lab will be to assist with all aspects of conducting electromagnetic articulometry (EMA) experiments, and managing the EMA lab. The department has dual Carstens EMA systems for studying conversational interaction and speech production in general. In addition to this work, the researcher may also oversee graduate and undergraduate students working on projects related to the two labs. The successful candidate will be encouraged to work on their own research and will more generally be part of a vibrant research environment that includes faculty and students in Linguistics, Psychology, and the Weinberg Institute for Cognitive Science.
A Ph.D. in Linguistics or related discipline is required. Applicants with expertise in the following laboratory techniques are particularly encouraged to apply: speech production (preferably with EMA) and perception, high levels of computational proficiency, and programming expertise. Specific experience with MATLAB, R, Python, statistical modeling and functional data analysis, signal processing, and with eye tracking and ultrasound, would be particularly useful but is not a prerequisite for the position.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of scripting languages (e.g. Perl, Python)
- Degree in Linguistics, with specialization in Phonology, Computational linguistics or similar
- Familiarity with software version control tools (e.g. Git)
- Solid communication skills
- Strong personal interest in learning, researching, and creating new technologies related to foreign languages, linguistics, phonetics, phonology and language technology
- Comfortable working in a fast paced, highly collaborative, dynamic work environment
