An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented statistician with a background either in the field of genetics or epidemiology at Research Assistant/Research Associate level to contribute to an interdisciplinary research program focused on investigating genetic markers involved in iron metabolism and the development of iron deficiency in chronic heart failure patients. 

The post is funded by the IMI BigData@Heart (https://www.bigdata-heart.eu/), primarily based in the Cardiovascular Epidemiology Unit, University of Cambridge and in close collaboration with the pharmaceutical company, Vifor Pharma (www.viforpharma.com), Switzerland. The position will offer training and experience in both academic and industry environments.  

Iron deficiency is prevalent in up to 50% of chronic heart failure patients and it has been shown that such patients have worse clinical outcomes. Supplementation with intravenous iron has been shown to improve quality of life, cardiac function and re-hospitalization rates in chronic heart failure patients. The aim of this project is to identify genetic markers found in chronic heart failure patients with concomitant iron deficiency which then might be predictive of improvement in cardiac function and clinical outcomes following treatment with intravenous iron as well as markers predisposing individuals to the development of iron deficiency and/or chronic heart failure. 

The post holder will have access to exceptional world-leading large-scale studies, including access to blood OMICS e.g. proteomics, metabolomics and lipidomics, genotype array data in approximately 50,000 individuals within the INTERVAL study and clinical studies from Vifor Pharma. 

Candidates should (i) hold a Masters or PhD in Statistics (or have equivalent qualifications) or a relevant subject or be in the final stages of obtaining their PhD or have equivalent experience; (ii) have experience in analysis of large complex epidemiological datasets; (iii) have experience of genetic association analysis and; (iv) have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD (or equivalent experience), including those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD. Where a PhD has yet to be awarded appointment will initially be made at research assistant and amended to research associate when the PhD is awarded.  If an individual has not submitted a PhD or is not working towards one they could be appointed as a Research Assistant if they have either a degree (and/or Master’s) in a relevant area or equivalent experience.

The funds for these posts are available for 2 years.
