I am sorry to hear of the passing of Bob Kates. I only met Bob once so I can't say I knew him, but I always valued his research and writing. He was certainly one of the major sources of knowledge on disasters that I sought our when I was preparing for field research in Peru in 1970 and continued to be so as his research and achievements continued over the ensuing years.

RADIX Friends and Colleagues,
It is will great sadness that I write to share with you news of the passing, one week ago, of Robert W. Kates. As you all know Bob was one of the pioneers of hazards research from his early days at Chicago and subsequently for over 50 years at Clark and other universities before retiring to Maine. His research and teaching planted many seeds which have flourished and continue to burn brightly far and wide.
Ian Burton.
