Movements is a one-day, interdisciplinary conference, which platforms academic and non-academic work on social and political movements in the arts and humanities, social sciences, and beyond. The event is supported by the Midlands3Cities DTP (M3C) Cohort Development Fund.

There will be no fee charged for presenting at, or attending, this conference.

Closing keynote: Vickie Cooper (Open University) and David Whyte (University of Liverpool)

This interdisciplinary conference will provide a space in which to discuss the impact that protest, activism and political/social movements might have on the contemporary political landscape. We invite proposals for papers that offer both critical and creative responses to activism, movements and protests from both a theoretical and empirical point of view. Potential topics could include, but are not limited to:

Women’s movements
The Iraq war demo now
Technology, social media, and activism in the 21st century
Re-reading earlier movements
Queer activism
Protest in the globalized era
Neo-right protests and counter-demonstrations
Environmental movements
Democracy, protests, and movements
Class politics and movements
Black activism, protest, and movements
Art and activism
Anti-corruption protests
Anti-austerity activism
Activism and cultural production

This conference also invites contributors from political parties, the cultural sector, the media and activist groups. Sessions will take the form of workshops under the banner of ‘what counts as activism?’

Please send panel proposals of no more than 700 words and abstract proposals of no more than 300 words. Traditional academic papers and creative pieces will be considered equally for up to 20-minute slots. Deadlines for proposals is Friday 20 April 2018. Successful applicants will be notified by mid-May. All abstracts should be sent to [log in to unmask]

There are a limited number of bursaries for unfunded and unwaged applicants are available. The bursary offers up to £50 to cover transport costs to and from the conference.

Funding for the bursary will be assigned on a first-come-first-served basis. Please indicate in your abstract submission whether you would like to be considered for a travel bursary.
