Netflix Nations: On the Geography of Digital Distribution

Television, once a broadcast medium, now also travels through our telephone lines, fiber optic cables, and wireless networks. It is delivered to viewers via apps, screens large and small, and media players of all kinds. In this unfamiliar environment, new global giants of television distribution are emerging—including Netflix, the world’s largest subscription video-on-demand service. This talk, based on a forthcoming manuscript, uses the case of Netflix to consider how a global video portal interacts with national audiences, markets, and institutions. It addresses a fundamental tension underlying Netflix's expansion-–the clash between the internet’s capacity for global distribution and the territorial nature of media trade, taste, and regulation. By tracking various controversies that have followed in the wake of Netflix’s international expansion (concerning local content, infrastructure and pricing), I explain how the Netflix case is proving to be a testing ground for evergreen debates about media imperialism, globalization, and other unfinished business in media studies.
Bio Ramon Lobato is Senior Research Fellow in the School of Media and Communication at RMIT University, Melbourne. A media industries scholar, Ramon focuses on distribution networks and how they structure access, discovery and audience experience. He is especially known for his work on media piracy. His books include Shadow Economies of Cinema (2012), The Informal Media Economy (2015 with J Thomas), and Geoblocking and Global Video Culture (2016 with J Meese). His new book on Netflix will be published later this year by NYU Press. Ramon is a member of the editorial collective for Media Industries journal, and an editorial board member for International Journal of Cultural Studies.
