Hi Ruth,

I've done similar research with my colleges here at NIH (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27930394), and we used GenderChecker (http://genderchecker.com/) to for gender checking. (You can buy the entire data with less than $200 dollars.) It's not 100 percent accurate, but works for most American/European first names, especially if you have a large dataset. Be very careful with Chinese/Japanese/Korean names; most of the time they should be neutral unless you further checked.

Hope this helps.

Subject: Identifying female authors

Dear All

I don't know if anyone can help with suggestions for an undergraduate student, but I thought this list would be a good place to start. His query as follows:

'I have a query about my final year literature project. I am currently collecting some information for my final year biology literature review project about gender equality in conservation literature.

Part of the process is to obtain all of the papers published in 5 different conservation journals and for each paper, note down the number of authors, the number of female authors and the gender of the lead and last authors. I am currently attempting to do this manually, and with over 2000 papers to go through it is going to take a long time! I was wondering if you knew of a quicker technique, or any resources that may have the information available already?'

If anyone has any suggestions, or can point to a methodology accessible to students, that would be much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Ruth
