We're looking at getting data in rather than getting it out, so don't have your issues. We can see the optionalData going into the database, but can't actually do anything with it :(

Hi Stephen,
I couldn't get optionalData to work at all - you can provision columns with optionalData, but if you then perform a GJ extract, the optional data doesn't seem to result. I didn't get as far as matching on it - we've ended up going a different route (still in design however), with the whole gradebook extract being matching against our student records system data. This is mostly because of the issues with Turnitin columns I'd say, though the optional data issue certainly didn't help.
Best wishes,
Dan

We've been reading the documentation and it suggests you can assign a unique ID when creating a column, using the "Type" key in the "optionalData" field of the json data, and then using the "Update matches by Metadata" option in the building block settings. (Otherwise it just matches by column name).
It doesn't seem to be working for us and we've got a ticket in Blackboard about it. Has anyone else tried this?

No - we are thinking of using the match by column name as we are concerned that summer course copy would create duplicates if we do the match on metadata.
Can I ask why you are using update matches by metadata - are you not copying courses? not copying grade centre or is there an advantage to metadata
Regards
Joseph

Well we have the situation where say the task name in our SRS is 'Coursework' so that's what would be set up as the assignment/column name. However we want a more meaningful name for the assignment and column for students and staff, so would want to update that name in the SRS to be something like 'History Essay'. As soon as we change the name in the SRS then it can't be the unique match, so we would get two things set up in Blackboard when we went to update - the original 'Coursework' and the new 'History Essay'. We'd rather it updated the name in Blackboard of the original one. Not having a very good name in the SRS is pretty widespread so we need to be able to change the names.
We don't copy the Grade Centre when we do the summer rollover. We haven't done for awhile because of certain things not copying well, dates needing to be changes, etc. and with automating the column creation it doesn't make much sense anyway as we can recreate most of it more accurately.
