The Global Sustainability Institute (GSI) was established by Anglia Ruskin University in 2011 as part of our University commitment to sustainability in research, teaching and operations. We are looking to recruit an exceptional post-doctoral Research Fellow to support work related to the Global Chaos Map Project internally funded by Anglia Ruskin University. The project consists in the development of a series of maps that will highlight global pressure points for 'chaos', measured by a wealth of data points collated from social media, newspapers, research output, journals etc. These are planned to be updated monthly and will track the following influencers and how these link to civil unrest:

Food

Fossil Fuels
Environmental

We are looking for an exceptional individual with social science background in a related discipline (e.g. environmental social sciences, political science, political ecology, geography). Professionals from the security sector are also strongly invited to apply.

The role of the Research Fellow will be to develop an appropriate methodology to ensure the robust collection and classification of events that will be included in the database. The Research Fellow may also contribute to collating, sanitising, and refining data ready for upload, therefore both qualitative and quantitative skills would be appreciated. The Research Fellow will liaise with a PhD researcher who will support the data collection activity.

The Research Fellow will contribute to providing commentary in their area of expertise, which will be published alongside the maps. Outputs will be a working paper connected to the methodology and rationale used to compile database and Chaos Maps and will constitute a solid basis for further academic publications.

This builds on the work of the Global Resource Observatory (https://goo.gl/o2PSWo), which aimed at developing a suite of models to forecast the effect of scarcity of natural resources on society. It is foreseen that the Research Fellow will collaborate with the line manager and colleagues from the GSI in writing applications to external funders to extend the length of the role.

Specific duties of the post holder include:
