Hi Eduardo,
Thanks for your message. I can see your point - in part.
In fact, it is common to discuss and analyse the fields of engineering design, physics and mathematics in the humanities and social sciences. It is not so common for them to be analysed from within the arts but intrinsically there is no problem.
Generally, it is useful to cast the widest net when trying to understand a problem.
Best wishes,
Terry

Dear Friends,
There is NOT lot of discussion about that the “Arts” belong contemporarily to a field designated as “Arts & Humanities” in Higher Education.
I find odd that any discussion about any degree, especially a doctoral degree, on Arts should be discussed outside this field. It would mean, reversely, that “Hard Sciences” and even “Social Sciences” would admit any discussion on their fields from any other field, especially from “Arts & Humanities”.
Let’s for a moment imagine that I, and my palls in Arts, start a discussion about degrees in Physics (or engineering or psychology). Imagine the outrage… So, for a moment, let us only accept people discussing PhDs on Arts that are, at least, from “Humanities” as helping neighbors.
Since Design is such a broad field that encompasses territories outside “Humanities” let these design areas rest a while outside this discussion.
Best,
Eduardo

I suspect however that, if I did have time, my contribution would be similarly opinion and anecdote-based (albeit different ones) as I don't have 'evidence', just a very different personal experience of these issues from that which you characterise. I do hope that others based in the studio will contribute their different voices to the debate and introduce some balance.

> Thanks for your question. The goal of a call for papers is to elicit response and debate from many positions and viewpoints. You can read the first five contributions for yourself. The introduction article that Jack Ox and I wrote will answer your question in part. You’ll find these articles here:

> My personal analysis of some widespread problems in doctoral programs in the creative arts and design appears in a book chapter titled “Now that we’re different, what’s still the same?” You can download it here:
