Forced Migration Processes: Trends, Concepts and Patterns
2nd International Research and Policy Workshop on Migration and Development
25-26 June 2018, Bonn, Germany
Call for Papers and Posters:
As European, African and Middle Eastern countries struggle to manage rapid increases in forced displacement, the policy community is increasingly recognizing the role that state fragility, conflict and under-development play in displacement and irregular migration. On 25-26 June 2018 policy makers and academic researchers will meet at the German Development Institute in Bonn, Germany to identify how cutting-edge research on forced migration can be applied to policy making. The event will be an opportunity for academic researchers to receive academic feedback for their research, to learn about the issues that are most pressing for the policy community, and how these needs can inform new research initiatives.
As part of the workshop, we invite proposals for full paper and poster presentations. Full papers will be presented in a traditional panel setting, with formal feedback from experts on forced displacement and migration. The poster session will be interactive and give researchers the opportunity to present new work to a diverse audience from both academia and public policy. The papers and posters will provide the context for a high-level panel of policy makers and researchers, who will be discussing the wider policy implications of the presented research.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- The relationship between economic development and displacement;
- The effect of government legitimacy on migration decisions;
- Environmental factors in migration/displacement;
- The role of security and conflict in migration and displacement processes;
- Empirical methodologies for understanding drivers of forced displacement.
Full papers should be at a ‘working paper’ stage, with complete results. Posters can feature early-stage research, and address conceptual or prospective issues in forced displacement. While papers and posters should have an empirical focus, the organisers are open to qualitative and quantitative research approaches. Depending on author interest, the organisers will consider either publishing a proceeding of the papers and posters through the German Development Institute, or organising a special issue based on the papers presented.
Please send abstracts of 200-300 words, including name(s), affiliation(s) and contact information, as PDF files to Charles Martin-Shields ([log in to unmask]) and Constantin Ruhe ([log in to unmask]) by 30 March 2018. Please note in the email subject line whether the abstract should be considered as a paper or poster presentation. Applicants can expect a decision by 21 April 2018.
To encourage a wide range of participation, the German Development Institute can provide need-based travel support to paper and poster presenters. Applicants should note on their abstracts if they would like to be considered for travel funds.
