*Apologies for cross posting*
Dear all,
The University of Southampton's Transportation Research Group are seeking to recruit a Research Fellow in GIS and Transport Engineering Data.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a high profile multi-disciplinary research project which is helping to improve the performance and reduce the costs of Britain's rail network. The Track to the Future project (t2f.org.uk) is funded by a £5.2million Programme Grant from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). It is led by Prof William Powrie FREng at the University of Southampton, and follows on from the very successful Track21 programme. We are looking to recruit a specialist in Geographical Information Systems for Transport to work on the Whole Life Modelling cross-cutting theme, which is being led by Prof John Preston and Dr Simon Blainey in the University of Southampton's Transportation Research Group (TRG). TRG is a multi-disciplinary group founded in 1967 and recognised worldwide as a leading University centre for research, teaching and knowledge transfer in transportation. The group is part of the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment, and is based on the new Boldrewood Innovation Campus in Southampton.
If appointed to this post, you will make a key contribution to the development of whole life cost and carbon modelling tools for railway track, working with other researchers both within TRG and across the consortium. You will make use of GIS to integrate and process a wide range of datasets in order to provide inputs to the track system models, and will produce tools for visualising and interpreting the model outputs. You will also engage with industry stakeholders to help ensure that the tools developed meet the needs of the rail industry while also fulfilling the aims of the research project. You will take the lead in disseminating project findings associated with their work through the production of publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at conferences and attendance at project meetings and workshops.
You will have (or be close to completion of) a PhD (or equivalent) in a quantitative discipline, preferably in transportation, GIS, or a closely related area. A masters level qualification in GIS would also be an advantage. You will have knowledge and experience of developing modelling and data processing tools using GIS, and should be able to demonstrate how these tools have been applied in a practical context. You will be able to communicate the results of academic research clearly both verbally and in writing, and should be confident at liaising with external stakeholders.
This post is suitable for researchers who are highly competent in the use of GIS, ideally for transport related applications, and is available with a start date of 1 June 2018.
