The research group of Professor Derek Ward-Thompson of the Jeremiah
Horrocks Institute for Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, of the University
of Central Lancashire, is seeking to appoint a new 3-year PDRA in
Observational Astronomy - specifically in Star Formation Research - funded
by an STFC Consolidated Grant.
The successful candidate will join a dynamic and enthusiastic Physics and
Astronomy team, which is currently expanding its teaching and research
portfolios, including BSc and MPhys Physics and Astrophysics, the opening of
new research laboratories, and a large, new, teaching telescope at the
Alston Observatory. We also have a long-established distance-learning degree
scheme in Astronomy that currently has over 300 enrolled students - the
largest in the UK.
Candidates will be able to demonstrate that they are able to conduct
research in Observational Star Formation that is of a very high quality that
complements or strengthens our existing research in star formation,
specifically related to our work with Herschel, JCMT and ALMA. The candidate
will have a PhD in Observational Astronomy, and will preferably have some
demonstrating or teaching skills.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
* Carry out world-class Observational Astronomy research that is related to
the current area of Observational Star Formation Research within the JHI,
specifically using our access to data from Herschel, JCMT and other similar
telescopes.
* Fulfil some of the research goals in the area of Observational Star
Formation Research outlined in the STFC Consolidated Grant held by the
JHI.
* Contribute to the general research culture of the JHI in terms of its
Astrophysics and Astronomy research.
* Publish research papers in world-class peer-reviewed journals.
* Present oral and poster contributions at UK and international conferences.
* Carry out other duties as required, such as research seminars,
demonstrating or tutorial duties, and outreach activities.
