The attached scan is from Joseph Ewan's "Rocky Mountain Naturalists" (Univ.
of Denver Press; 1950). In John Hendley Barnhart's "Biographical Notes Upon
Botanists", he adds that "Burke went to California in '49 or '50, was a
miner for a while, then settled on a farm in Harrisonville, Cass Co,
Missouri, where he was living 29 Sep 1853 (see his letter of that date to
Torrey)". I find the letter is listed in the holdings of NYBG ("Catalog of
the Manuscript and Archival Collections and Index to the Correspondence of
John Torrey ; Library of the New York Botanical Garden"; G.K. Hall & Co.,
1973).

Subject: Biographical Query
Dear colleagues,
In "Science and Colonial Expansion" (Academic Press, 1979), Lucile Brockway
quotes J.D. Hooker's description of his father's practice of sending men to
distant parts of the world to acquire plants and seeds for the collection at
Kew. Hooker briefly notes a Mr Burke who was sent to California, in part
with funds received from the Duke of Northumberland and Lord Derby. Can
anyone point me to more information about Mr Burke? Neither Hooker nor
Brockway supply a given name or dates.
Many thanks,
Geoffrey Little / Montreal

I quick search in Google brought me to Joseph Burke (1812-1873):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Burke_(botanist), this page states "He
subsequently went on a joint expedition with collectors from Kew to Hudson
Bay and California."
Also, a page from Kew about Burke
