The Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg is Scandinavia’s largest arts faculty, and provides – from an international perspective – a unique combination and breadth of educational programmes, as well as research in the principle forms of contemporary artistic expression.
Today, the Faculty is made up of the following three departments: the Academy of Music and Drama, Valand Academy, and the Academy of Design and Crafts (including the Steneby campus in Dals Långed). The Faculty has approximately 1400 full-time students, 40 doctoral students and 380 members of staff. Teacher education in Visual Arts, Craft, Music, Dance and Theatre is also pursued at the Faculty.
Over the next five years, the entire Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts is to undergo a major change. It is planned that Faculty operations and activities are to be co-located in a common campus (Konst 2025)in order to better utilise in-house competence and to create greater collaborative opportunities for students, teachers, researchers and other staff.
Two of the Faculty’s departments, Valand Academy and the Academy of Design and Crafts (HDK), have been undergoing a process of development over the past two years, and are to merge on 1st January 2020.
We are currently looking for a Head of Department who will lead Valand Academy until January 2020, and then the new department Valand Academy/HDK

Tasks and Duties
With the support of a team comprising the Deputy Head of Department, the Assistant Head of Department for Research, the Assistant Head of Department for Education, the Administrative Manager and the Technical Manager, your tasks and duties as a Head of Department involve you having the overall responsibility for operations and activities at the department, and for developing the department’s potential within education and third-stream collaboration, as well as within the department’s different fields of research. As Head of Department you will also work towards fostering participation in artistic arenas, both nationally and internationally. Additionally, you will be responsible for the department’s finances, and for ensuring staff skills and competency.
An important task for the Head of Department will be to lead and implement the ongoing process of change towards the merger of Valand Academy and the Academy of Design and Crafts, in collaboration with the Faculty Management.
The Head of Department is a member of the Heads of Departments’ Council at the Faculty, under the leadership of the Dean, and is expected, at the side of departmental responsibility, to take part actively in work related to vision, strategy and organisation – the aim of which is to drive and support the organisational process of change towards the merger, and towards a common arts campus, in accordance with Konst 2025.<https://konst.gu.se/fakulteten/projekt-konst-2025>
Qualifications
You have well-documented artistic competence and knowledge of research issues, as well as documented experience of leadership in the artistic field, preferably within the education sector. You should have an understanding of the strategic importance of research and education, and an interest in artistic research. Having a doctorate will be considered an advantageous, additional qualification. You should have knowledge of what it involves to lead in an administrative organisation, and to work within the frames to which an authority has to relate. We attach great importance to your experience as a manager/director within academia, or other relevant activities.
Your leadership is strategic, mature and clear. You have the ability to listen, enthuse, and communicate. You understand the conditions under which the department is operating and is organised, and you can delegate, lead and allocate work in a way that benefits operations and the organisation as a whole, which means the ability to create good working conditions for others. You also have the ability to develop operations and activities and the academic leadership of the department in a collegially-based structure. Furthermore, you are consistent in your decision-making and follow the decisions taken by the organisation.
Since a great part of University operations and activities are conducted in Swedish – at the same time as the department has an international profile – it is necessary that a potential candidate can take part fully in both these aspects of its organisation. The Head of Department is therefore required to have knowledge of Swedish or another Scandinavian language, as well as very good knowledge of English in both speech and in writing.
We will conduct an overall assessment, based on the tasks and duties, and the qualities and experience specified above, in order to appoint the candidate who is considered to have the best qualities and qualifications to lead and develop operations and activities at the department. Great importance is attached to personal suitability.
Employment
This managerial position entails a commissioned full-time (100%) position as Head of Department for 6 years, with an appraisal meeting after 3 years, the location of which is, until further notice, at Valand Academy. Duties will commence in January 2019, or as agreed.
Appointment procedures
The recruitment process consists of interviews and tests and entails an advisory election at the department. It is the Dean of the Faculty who finally appoints the Head of Department.
Interviews will be carried out during the first week of March as well as on the 11th of April.
