“For the sake of the child – Egyptian parents in Amsterdam and their quest for a better future for their children”
Wiebe Ruijtenberg
PhD researcher, Department of Anthropology and Development Studies, Radboud University, Netherlands
For Egyptian migrants in Amsterdam, migration has always been a future-oriented, family project. Yet, as migration often failed to bring about a better future for mi¬grants themselves, the future of their children became all the more salient. Indeed, the possibility of a better future for their children seems to make their own suffering worthwhile.
This talk will highlight Egyptian parents’ strategies to realize a better future for their children. It will specifically look at those moments in which things go wrong for mi¬grant children, despite their parents’ best efforts. Finally, the talk will explore parents’ own explanations for why things go wrong, and emphasize how these explanations inform parents’ next steps and as such indeed shape the future of not just the Dutch- Egyptian community but of Dutch society more broadly.
