Pratt Institute seeks a founding Director of a planned Center for Teaching and Learning, scheduled to open its doors for the Fall 2018 semester.
The Center for Teaching and Learning will advance, support, and sustain a strong and inclusive culture of teaching and learning across the Institute, serving all of Pratt’s faculty. As it contributes to quality teaching within and across disciplines at Pratt—in our studios as well as in our classrooms—the Center will also help to ensure that we serve our students as well as we possibly can and that we achieve equitable outcomes for all.
Ideally, the Center for Teaching and Learning will be a place that supports faculty in the generation and nurturing of ideas related to teaching and learning (including assessment for learning), as well as a practical resource that offers programs and tools related to pedagogy, curriculum development, learning research and more.
Located on a historic 25-acre landscaped campus in the culturally diverse Clinton Hill section of Brooklyn, Pratt is internationally recognized. Its six Schools—Art, Design, Architecture, Information, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Continuing & Professional Studies—enroll approximately 5,000 students a year from around the world. Approximately 1/3 of Pratt’s students are international. Pratt’s faculty is equally diverse, with 1000+ members from across the United States and around the world: approximately 150 full-time, tenure-track and tenured faculty, and 850 part-time faculty, represented by UFCT 1460. We are committed to developing and sustaining a diverse and inclusive community, and to shaping an environment for teaching, learning, research, creative and professional work that advances this vision.
Position Summary
Reporting to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, the founding Director will be a proven leader who can advance teaching and learning, including assessment for learning, at the Institute, with particular attention to the needs—and opportunities—offered by Pratt’s expertise in art and design fields. The Director will have a demonstrated knowledge of research on teaching, learning and assessment; meaningful experience in the areas of faculty and/or organizational development, and a strong record of teaching in higher education. Working with partners across campus, and drawing on current research in relevant fields, the Director will shape and implement a mission for the Center that establishes it as a vital, trusted source of energy and support for teaching, learning and assessment at Pratt. Developing faculty leadership for teaching, learning and assessment is expected to be a critical part of its operations.
