Hello all,
I am asking for help for a clinical midwifery colleague, who is interested to know about using sterile water or saline injections with women in labour and whether or not they are effective.
She has worked hard to produce the guidelines and PGD, trained staff and gained approval from the OB and Anaesthesia colleagues. However, Pharmacy colleagues are refusing to allow approval as they say 'there isn’t enough evidence of the efficacy; and as no local hospitals use it they don’t want to pass it.’
With a quick Google Scholar search I identified one overview of reviews, three systematic reviews (two in Cochrane), and at least four RCTs which suggest it is a promising intervention. Do you know of any recent SRs or trials that I could pass on?
My colleague is wondering whether other Trusts in the UK use sterile water/saline injections and if so, has anyone collected evidence that they work (or not)?
Thanks for you help. All replies will be forwarded on. We're looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this!
Best regards,
Ginny
