Re: Panoramas and interactive zooms:

Hi James,

I've started to explore Thinglink (www.thinglink.com) There's a free and a paid for version and as a museum you can get 50% discount on the paid for version, which I would recommend choosing as it gives you a lot more flexibility.

The platform doesn't do everything you mention, (it doesn't zoom for instance) and I wouldn't say it's perfect, but I've found it a useful tool so far.

Here's an example: https://www.thinglink.com/scene/974267478492315649

Also, if you let your membership lapse, you do still have access to all the Thinglinks that you made, which is a bonus!

Best,

Izzy

Yes, you can extract events from facebook via API. It causes some "representation" issues such as for example how places and organizers are identified in your internal system. In addition information about licensing and rights of data in the facebook knowledge graph are not really clear. An example of application which extracts data about events from facebook is https://isamuni.vii.ovh/ .

I must say that using facebook as primary source for publishing events of course will cause lock-in .

Hi James,

We (Natural History Museum) have recently used a solution called Micrio which does a lot of what you are looking for. We have used it in our mobile visitor app and also in one of our gallery interactives. I’m afraid it isn’t free though! If you like I can put you in touch with one of the developers in my team who worked on both of those projects (email me off-chain and we can go from there).

Thanks

Subject: Panoramas and interactive zooms

Hi all

Probably 10 years ago when I Kew I was creating what at the time seemed like huge stitched panoramas and displaying them tiled with the likes of Zoomify. There were even tools to make interactive hotspots etc. I still have the images and it would be nice to bring a few back to life. Here's a very seasonal example - https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oNnF4OeRDdYnzZoWrDaCeN8E8_onk7sC/view?usp=sharing

My question is, having not dabbled with this since, and now feeling like an ignorant newby, what's the state of the art display tool today?

The list of possible features to me might include the likes of:

- smooth zoom and panning from full image to tiniest detail

- ability to create predefined 'views' to link to

- ability to create hotspots and regions with definable interactions, such as displaying information and links

- obviously all the basic stuff like platform independent, responsive, full screen

- I guess seamlessly integrated with alternative displays such as AR

- perhaps a 3rd party platform rather than installed scripts

- free

I'm aware that Leaflet can display tiled images as well as maps, so that could tick a few boxes. And I also presume IIIF could be in the mix somewhere. But I want a low barrier, quick and simple thing to build in, rather than something I'd need to install, code etc.

Excuse the ignorance!

Cheers, James

Thank you for getting in touch about your business/marketing/advertising proposition.

I get an enormous number of unsolicited emails and have little time to follow them all up. However, if your message is about something that I think the team at Waddesdon might be interested in, I will either respond to you myself or forward your message to ask one of my colleagues to do so.

I apologise for this rather impersonal, standardised message. It is a reflection of the number of approaches I receive every day that has made this necessary. I would be grateful if you would remove me from your mailing list, and please do not email me again about this business proposition if you receive this.

Best wishes
