We are pleased to announce 2 Post-Doctoral Research Fellow positions
(1 in HCI, 1 in IR) at City, University of London to work on dminr
(https://digitalnewsinitiative.com/dni-projects/dminr), a research
project funded by the Google Digital News Initiative (DNI).
These are fixed-term roles until December 2019. For further
information please contact Andrew MacFarlane ([log in to unmask]).
Background
dminr is a collaboration between the Centre for HCI Design (HCID) and
the Digital Information Initiative (DII) research group in the
Department of Journalism at City, University of London. dminr will
involve the research, design and evaluation of a Web-based data mining
tool to support journalists making new and useful connections between
public data sources.
Responsibilities
HCI Research Fellow: The HCI Research Fellow will plan, conduct,
present and publish research on dminr. This will involve understanding
the current and future verification requirements of investigative
journalists to provide accurate and original news stories; designing
wireframe prototypes of the dminr tool which aims to better support
news verification. Based on those requirements, they will take a
leading role in the interface and interaction design of the tool as
well as in the planning and conducting lab and field-based user
evaluations of the tool.
IR Research Fellow: The IR Research Fellow will also plan, conduct,
present and publish research on dminr. They will also take a leading
role in designing software to support journalists’ verification of
information through the initial collection of user interests (an
initial search on aggregated sources) and building profiles of
journalist interests which will help automate the process of
verification (through crawling of sources based on the user profile).
Person specification
HCI Research Fellow: The successful candidate will have a PhD in
Human-Computer Interaction or a related subject (or expect to submit
by end of February 2018) and have experience in the user-centred
design and evaluation of wireframe prototypes. They will also have
publication experience in high-quality academic conferences and/or
journals as well as experience in qualitative data collection and
analysis.
IR Research Fellow: The successful candidate will have a PhD in
Information Retrieval or a related subject (e.g. Artificial
Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Mining, Text Analytics).
Applicants currently writing-up their PhD (who expect to submit by end
of February 2018) are eligible to apply. They should also have
experience in the design and production of software applications (and
ideally Web-based applications) and in publishing their research in
high-quality academic conferences and/or journals.
Application and more details
Closing date for applicaitons is 26th January 2018, with interviews in
