HI!
I would like to share my experience: I have been a pro bono editor for a
journal. The work is not too burdensome and sometimes it has been
interesting getting to work with various authors. I was offered to become a
senior editor which meant more responsibilities and work for 2000GBP per
year. Based on the description I received I accepted the offer, but then
when the first big workload appeared in my email in need of my really
urgent and full attention it all became clear. I declined. It is probably
true that Chief-editors receive remuneration. Mine told me that the
publisher did not want to pay more than 2000GBP to a senior editor. It
seems to me that there is quite some secrecy around the "banal" issues of
remuneration in academia and that includes not only journals but also
conferences (reviewing abstracts and full papers for free).
I doubt these practices will change any day soon, as they have been going
on for too long.
Kind regards,
Michail
