I love this idea of the library as a refuge... the library can also be a kind of 'long' place, a place that is (relatively) stable and persists when other cycles of activity turn over, and over... a place to come back to, to find ourselves again on familiar ground... maybe even, a place to belong in?
Do I dream too loud?

Don, this is a very simple idea and maybe not what you’re looking for, but I think we need places of refuge from the constant daily bombardment of sound, visual imagery and other attempts to hijack and manipulate our attention.
It’s hard to find peace and quiet anymore. I’d love to see libraries promote silence, contemplation, and reflection along with their traditional research and reading room functions. Many libraries seem to be going in the opposite direction, trying to “compete for attention. Libraries are known for quiet. Why not own it and forge it into a big beautiful vision.some kind of modern-day monastery.
