I have been following the conversation as well and found it fascinating to see it move towards a dialogue on each of the threads about conservation and preservation - of works and also one could argue of context, given how critical context is too all curatorial efforts and new media art practice - and certainly new media works and practices. A number of us (Sarah Cook,Indigenous new media artists such as Cheryl l'Hirondelle and Jason Lewis, myself) have been chasing The Banff Centre to re-instate the Banff New Media Institute archives which they took offline three years ago when they had a change of leadership, and have yet to put back on line. (It has documentation from 1995 to 2005 of all of the Banff dialogues, documentation of art works. related documents and material from the earlier Art in Virtual Environments work. So - more testimony to the vulnerability of new media archives and histories.
That said - I wanted to prompt contributers back to my posting of December 4th where I asked for reflections on definitions and experiences of new media public art, both from a curatorial and artistic perspective. I appreciate the interventions to date, and the testimonials from a number of you. And the conservation, maintenance issues are significant indeed.
Just wanted to kick us back to that larger dialogue for additional commentary.
