Dear Mersenne,
There has been a bit of discussion recently about the feasibility of organising events and undertaking research in ways which are less dependent on flying.
I've given my own views on the subject here: http://unsettlingscientificstories.co.uk/grounded-anticipating-scholarly-futures-without-flying.
On social media we've had a bit of discussion about mechanisms which could help in develop more effective methods of collaboration at a distance. One suggestion (from Jon Agar) was to set up an 'Archival Work Credit Bank', which would allow researchers to exchange time at locally-accessible archives with each other. These seem like very exciting possibilities, but throw up a lot of challenges as well.
I would very much welcome any thoughts, suggestions or criticisms which list members have about this subject, whether on the list or off it. If you would prefer to email me directly you can do so on [log in to unmask]; we'll aim to set up a Facebook group in the near future as well. If there is interest, we can then figure out some more formal ways of moving forward.
With many thanks, and best wishes,
Mat Paskins
