Kingston University and the Crafts Council are collaborating to offer a Collaborative Doctoral Award, supported by LDOC - September 2018 start
‘Diversity in Craft’

The project will investigate the role in craft discourse and production of interactions between different cultural practices, expanding knowledge and generating evidence to inform policy and practice to better champion and develop diverse craft practices among makers from migrant and diasporic communities.
By examining the contribution, and interplay, of diverse cultural traditions to craft, evidence produced will give fresh direction to arts policy and programmes to enable diversity of practice and engagement to grow. Exploring craft practice in a sample of BAME communities, the project will identify how different craft traditions interconnect, and will interrogate the drivers of those connections.

The Studentship
Applications are now invited for both full-time and part-time students (AHRC eligibility criteria apply). In order to be eligible to apply for this award, you should apply first to Kingston University by the application deadline detailed below.
The studentship includes an AHRC stipend for three years or pro rata for six years part-time, plus fees at home/EU rates. AHRC Maintenance rates for 2018-19 are yet to be announced - the doctoral stipend for 2017-18 was £16,553 (three years full-time or part-time equivalent for six years); levels are likely to rise slightly for 2018-19.
As a LDOC student, the person selected will have full access to the LDOC specialist Design Research Training and Knowledge Exchange Programme, developed in response to the changing needs of an emerging generation of Design researchers both as pioneering and visionary individuals and as a growing cohort determining future research agendas.

Kingston University’s supervision is set within a thriving post-graduate community at Kingston School of Art, with the faculty renowned for its research excellence in the School of Critical Studies and Creative Industries. The Crafts Council has experience of designing and managing collaborative research funded by the research councils, including PhDs and academic residencies.
Kingston School of Art and the Crafts Council have a history of rich and productive collaborations. This PhD studentship offers the opportunity to build on and strengthen the success of this relationship. The combined and complementary areas of expertise and skill sets, as well as mutual research interests, suggests that this could be a very fruitful partnership.
