Subject: Specific and general contacts/advice for research on education in Guyana and Grenada
Hello,
I'm a PhD level cultural/historical geographer doing a project about Black spaces of education in London 1960-1990 and I've found some archival records at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies of quite radical and interesting exchanges by groups of young people from the London area to Caribbean countries in the 1980s including Guyana and Grenada that I am interested in finding more about. I have been successful in securing money to fund research trips to both countries, but have little to go off by way of contacts for when I'm there thus far.
My email to the group is, therefore, to see if anybody has any relevant contacts that they can pass on to me in relation to the exchanges detailed below. I am also keen to see if anyone has more general contacts in the local universities (history and geography departments) and also to hear of anyone's experiences around using archives in Guyana and Grenada (I am, for example, looking for copies of the Free West Indian newspaper around the dates of the Grenada exchanges and have been unsuccessful in finding copies thus far).
Many thanks for your help and best wishes, Jacob Fairless Nicholson
The details of the exchanges I am particularly interested in are as follows:
Croydon Supplementary Education Project to Guyana, 26th July - 27th August 1988 Receiving organisation: Rotary Club of Linden / Spartan's Youth Club at the St. Joseph the Worker Roman Catholic Church, Linden, Guyana under the organisation of Rev. Fr. George Vanderwood.
London Borough Haringey (led by Cllr Bernie Grant) to Grenada, 6th March - 2nd April 1982 Receiving organisation: Ministry of National Mobilisation, Selwyn Strachan
Ujima Housing Association to Grenada, 6th March - 17th April 1983 Receiving organiser: Mrs Julia Thomas (Youth Officer), Pedmotemp, St Davids, Vincent's Post Office, Grenada / Mr Linwell Purcell, Department of Nat. Mobilisation
Moonshine Community Arts Workshop to Grenada, 13th March - 24th April 1980
Organiser: Ms Esther Small, Grenada High Commission London / Minister for Sport and Recreation, Grenada
