Faculty/department: Civil Engineering and Geosciences
Level: PhD degree
Maximum employment: 38 hours per week (1 FTE)
Duration of contract: Tenure track
Salary scale: €3475 to €5861 per month gross

Civil Engineering and Geosciences
The Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) provides leading international research and education, with innovation and sustainability as central themes. Research and education are closely interwoven and address societal challenges. The Faculty consists of the departments of Transport and Planning, Structural Engineering, Geoscience and Engineering, Water Management, Hydraulic Engineering, and Geoscience and Remote Sensing.

The Transport and Planning Department (T&P) has been awarded the maximum score for all research assessments for the last 15 years. The faculty was ranked second in the latest QS world university ranking, and Delft University of Technology was ranked first in the Shanghai Ranking 2017 in the field of Transport Science & Technology. T&P (with about 120 members) has a strong track record in traffic flow theory, traffic simulation, dynamic traffic management, and intelligent transport systems of all transport modes, including road, railway, pedestrians, and urban public transport. A trademark of the department is the use of empirical data, incorporating human factors and advanced modelling tools.
The Railway Traffic Operations and Management group addresses analytics, modelling, algorithm development, and simulation for integral planning and management of railway operations with a focus on optimal utilisation of resources by improved methods for timetabling, train control, and real-time railway traffic management. The group is responsible for several MSc courses on railway operations, including ‘Railway Traffic Management’, ‘Railway Operations and Control’ and 'Transport Safety', and the supervision of MSc students graduating in railway operations.

Job description
You will conduct scientific research on real-time railway traffic management. The research will develop concepts, methodologies, and tools to support and automate operational processes and decision making for smooth railway transportation, increased capacity, and reduced delays. The research should take into account opportunities offered by new ICT technologies such as ERTMS and big data. You are expected to contribute to the initiation, acquisition, and execution of research projects, including supervision of PhD and MSc students. Cooperation with other members of the scientific staff and establishing relationships with practitioners are important. Moreover, you will contribute to teaching at the MSc and BSc levels.
Every new Assistant Professor will be given a Tenure Track position. This process leading
up to a permanent appointment with the prospect of becoming an Associate or full Professor, offers young, talented academics a clear and attractive career path. During the Tenure Track, you will have the opportunity to develop into an internationally acknowledged and recognised academic. We offer a structured career and personal development programme designed to offer individual academics as much support as possible.

Requirements
You must have a PhD degree in Railway Transportation or a related discipline, a fundamental knowledge of optimisation and computer programming skills. You should be able to demonstrate outstanding research potential, have published in leading international scientific journals, and have experience as a post-doctoral researcher. Experience in teaching is considered an advantage. You also have an open personality and good communication skills in written and spoken English.

Conditions of employment
A tenure-track position is offered for six years. Based on performance indicators agreed upon at the start of the appointment, a decision will be made by the fifth year whether to offer you a permanent faculty position. TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, a discount for health insurance and sport memberships, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged. An International Children’s Centre offers childcare and an international primary school. Dual Career Services offers support to accompanying partners. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. TU Delft sets specific standards for the English competency of the teaching staff and offers training to improve English competency. Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. If you have less than five years of experience and do not yet have your teaching certificate, we allow you up to three years to obtain this.
