Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH) is a world-class research organisation focusing on land and freshwater ecosystems and their interaction with the atmosphere.
We have IT at the heart of our strategy and are constantly looking for new ways to apply cutting-edge technologies to the problems we encounter. We are working in areas such as Big Data and analytics, I.o.T. and sensor networks and making use of recent investments in research cloud infrastructures (e.g. the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) JASMIN facility) to build collaborative environments for access to data and analyses.
CEH is committed to the development of our staff. We will provide routes for genuine career progression and development, through exposure to new technologies, working with and learning from a wider team of IT experts, and access to a well-resourced training programme. There will be opportunities to work on different aspects of the software stack, lead and manage staff and projects, and develop your own ideas and specialisms in delivering environmental science and data at a world-class research organisation.
You will work within a group of IT, data and science specialists and will interact more widely with scientists across CEH on a daily basis.
There are opportunities for overseas travel to engage with end-users to develop requirements.
Current projects include:
• EDgE (edge.climate.copernicus.eu): delivering state-of-the-art hydrological and climate data to a range of European end-users
• The UK National River Flow Archive (nrfa.ceh.ac.uk): supporting understanding of water resources and flooding through the provision of river flow data
• The CEH Environmental Information Platform (eip.ceh.ac.uk): enhanced access and visualisation of key CEH data holdings, including the UK Lakes and Droughts Portals
• Majic (majic.ceh.ac.uk): a user-friendly web-interface to run complex models on a large cloud / HPC infrastructure.
It is essential that you have a good degree in a numerate subject, preferably a Masters, with significant computing content or equivalent.
You must have good communication skills and demonstrable experience in using JavaScript for interface development, interacting with web-services, backed up by examples of significant outputs.
It is desirable that you have experience of backend design and development, particularly in Python using frameworks such as Django or Pyramid and also a desire to learn more.
