Dear Colleagues,
We would like to draw to your attention the following interdisciplinary session at the 2018 EGU General Assembly in Vienna (8 - 13 April, 2018):
TS9.1/GD7.3/SM 4.16
Plate tectonic processes in the oceans, from continental rifting to seafloor spreading and subduction initiation: insights from scientific drilling, marine geophysics and ophiolites (co-organized)
Session description:
The majority of the fundamental plate tectonic processes that control the birth, evolution, and closure of ocean basins occur below sea level. Understanding these processes, therefore, requires a combination of direct exploration of the seafloor, sub-surface geophysical imaging, and the study of ophiolites.
This interdisciplinary session seeks contributions presenting new results from recent and past scientific drilling projects (IODP/ICDP), advances in imaging structures in oceanic lithosphere, and all aspects of ophiolite investigations. In particular we solicit contributions addressing the processes associated with the transition from continental rifting to stable oceanic magmatic spreading, studies related to magmatic, tectonic and hydrothermal processes operating at mid-ocean ridges (including those associated with oceanic detachment faults), and new advances in understanding the poorly constrained process of intra-oceanic subduction initiation.
