Deputy Director, Statistics, Department for Transport , London
Deputy Director, Statistics – Road and Freight (SRF) leads the provision of high quality statistics about freight, traffic, road lengths, road conditions, inter-urban reliability, and local congestion. It is one of two senior civil service statistical posts across the Department and an important part of the senior statistical leadership of the Department. The SRF team currently has a headcount of 26 split across London (22) and Hastings (4).
The information SRF produces is used in policy making for example in roads investment and in relation to speed limits for HGVs. SRF data are used to produce single departmental plan indicators (reliability of journeys on the motorway and A road network, and total greenhouse gas emissions from transport), as well as for road casualty rates. They are also used by DfT modellers particularly looking at specific local areas, used in forecasting and scenario-testing. The data are essential for the production of environmental statistics such as the National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (which are required to meet various international directives), for monitoring progress against international agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol, Paris Agreement and for monitoring the UK’s own environmental targets. SRF is also home to the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) team. The team’s services are always in demand and they produce a range of spatial analysis, including maps, for customers across the Department.
