Hi Claire
Don't know if you're aware of the work of Nina Simon - her approach to 'social bridging' - 'people making connections to others who are not like them' is almost exactly what you're talking about if in a community/museum context. Starting from this blogpost in 2012: http://museumtwo.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/building-community-bridges-so-what.html, she's been very articulate ever since as she's developed her thinking about nature of the opportunity and what benefits it can deliver, and has documented her successes and the limits she's hit.
Her museum has brought ideas of its role as social facilitator within a community front and centre, as shown in their Theory of Change here: https://www.fracturedatlas.org/site/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/mah-artist-toc.png. It's a massive commitment for an organisation to take and follow through on at this level, and her open sharing of their process is a really good resource for any organisation or team whatever level they're taking it to - lots of challenge and practical tips through the blog, also from a wider international community who share this interest.
Hope this helps
Dee
