Join a discussion at the British Library on the exciting intersection between family history research and archived oral history recordings
Mon 30 Oct 2017, 12:30 - 13:30
Knowledge Centre, The British Library, 96 Euston Road, London NW1 2DB
Family historians make up a significant proportion of users of archives and libraries across the UK and exploring their interaction with these is increasingly important. Through case studies from the British Library’s oral history section and from local history research in the Leicestershire area, Mary Stewart (Curator of Oral History, British Library) and Cynthia Brown (Family and Local History researcher) will discuss how archived recordings add crucial context to family research. They will explore how some families have reacted when accessing a relative’s audio interview, and how the interview intersects with existing family histories.
These examples will prove informative for those working with collections that contain oral history, and encourage more use of archived resources amongst archivists, family historians and oral historians.
The speakers will also consider how internet access to catalogue data and archived audio recordings brings both new perspectives to the researcher but also raises ethical questions, and end with discussing some possible steps to address these challenges.
Please bring your packed lunch. Tea, coffee and cake will be provided. This is part of the Feed the Mind [hyperlink to https://www.bl.uk/events/feed-the-mind-2017] series.
