RAS Public Lecture: Photographing the Universe – Tue 10 October

Technology and astronomy have always gone hand in hand, with advances in astronomical instrumentation revealing ever more astonishing views of the cosmos, while new scientific ideas and theories drive the development of ever more powerful tools for testing them. The revolutionary impact of the telescope on astronomy is a familiar story, but few people know how much photography and astronomy have influenced each other over the last two hundred years. From early drawings to the latest high-resolution digital images and from pin-hole cameras to the latest electronic detectors, this talk explores astronomy's long association with photography taking in science, technology, art and history on the way.

Are you an academic on an insecure contract?

A new research project is investigating the perceptions and experiences of casualised academic staff as to the effects of casualisation on the teaching and learning of undergraduate students. The study will take the form of email interviews with UK-based academics from a range of disciplines who are on fixed term, zero-hours or similar forms of insecure academic contract.

So if this applies to you and you are interested in participating or learning more about what that would involve, please email the researchers: Dr Barbara Read (University of Glasgow) [log in to unmask] and Professor Carole Leathwood (London Metropolitan University) [log in to unmask] More information is available at:

https://barbarareadsite.wordpress.com/2017/09/he-project/

The study has received research ethics approval from the University of Glasgow. All participants and their department/university will be anonymised and confidentiality will be protected.

Fellows signature book

Since the RAS was founded, new Fellows attending their first meeting have been invited to add their signature to a signing-in book (this is different to the signing-in book in reception). The current version of this book went missing for a few years but has recently been rediscovered. If any Fellows who joined in the last 5 years will be attending the RAS on Friday 13th October and would like to add their name, the book will be available in the Library from 3.30pm to 6pm on that day.

We have also updated the list of duplicate books available to Fellows: http://royast.cirqahosting.com/HeritageScripts/Hapi.dll/DisplayWidgets?Widget1=LibraryNewsFull&PageName=Widget1.htm#LN0001
