Hi Luke and all,
You have done a useful job in opening up some of the underlying theoretical issue, and there is a lot that could be said about these. But for the moment I’m going to be brief and perhaps return to the underlying issues later (work deadlines!).
The most important thing to note is that there is nothing at a superficial level of grammar or common usage in English that would make the question in this email subject problematic. In ordinary usage we could answer “yes” to the question.
Books do contain and transmit knowledge. I could even mount a detailed common sense argument and explanation to justify such a claim.
This observation is important because it is telling us something about the way we use ordinary language in English.
An advertising agency Creative Director, in exasperation, once said to a colleague of mine who was, like me, troubled by aspects of communication theory: “Look! I’m paid to make it work, while you are paid to work it to death”!
I profoundly disagree with the Creative Director, but to explain why would take us into some altogether different territory.
When my deadline is dealt with, I’m happy to return to this discussion. But there are others on this list who know the territory that needs exploring.
David
