19th Conference on Spoken English at Villetaneuse (ALOES 2018) with a pre-cinference workshop on voice quality. Paris, France. 5-7 April 2018.
Voice quality in English: from the production of a phonation type to the perception of a social variable.
Invited speaker: Professor Richard Wright, Washington University: Voice quality types and uses in North American English.
For its 19th edition, the Villetaneuse Conference on Spoken English, organized by ALOES and Université Paris 13, is honoured to welcome Professor Richard Wright, from the University of Washington. As is the custom, the conference will take place at Villetaneuse (Université Paris 13).
Professor Wright is Director of the Linguistic Phonetics Laboratory and Chair of the Department of Linguistics. His primary research interest is in understanding sources of systematic variation in the production and perception of language, and how it relates to language universals and language structure, prosody, and discourse. As part of this research he is interested in describing the phonetics of endangered and under-described languages. He is currently working on voice quality and will give a conference on voice quality types and uses in North American English.
The topic for the conference will therefore be voice quality in English, from both perspectives of production and perception. Submissions dealing with the way voice quality can be measured (articulatory, acoustic and/or perceptual methods), with the various corpora that can be used for these purposes, with the different types of phonation that can be encountered and what physiological or acoustic criteria they relate to will be most welcome. The stylistic and social aspects of voice quality will also be most interesting issues: if voice quality is not part of the sound system of English, it can be used for social and stylistic purposes. The most striking example lately is probably the widespread use of creaky voice among young people, and more particularly young women. The social significance of voice quality features in English will be questioned. What do we mean when we use a particular type of phonation? Can we find geographical variation? What are the social implications, the identity issues? These are a few questions, amongst others, that might be raised during the conference. We will give priority to papers dealing with voice quality, but will also consider submissions on other topics in the field of spoken English.
Each talk will be 30 minutes long, followed by 10 minutes for discussion. Posters might also be a possibility.

6th International Symposium on Tonal Aspects of Languages. Berlin, Germany. 18-20 June 2018.
Call for Papers
The Sixth International Symposium on Tonal Aspects of Languages will be held in Berlin, Germany, from Monday, June 18 till Wednesday, June 20, 2018. TAL 2018 will be organized at Beuth University Berlin conveniently located in the city center close to all major attractions. TAL 2018 is timed after Speech Prosody 2018 in Poznań, Poland, June 13-16, only a three-hour train ride away. TAL 2018 is supported by the International Speech Communication Association and the ISCA SProSIG.
The symposium will continue the tradition of the previous five symposia, aiming to present state-of-the-art research on the typological, phonetic, phonological, psycholinguistic, acquisitional, and technological aspects of tonal contrasts. We invite contributions from all these areas. Also welcome are contributions on non-tone languages and the use of tone in poetry or song.

TIE2018, to be held at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, from 11-13 October 2018, continues the tradition of the biennial international TIE conference series on Tone and Intonation. We welcome contributions on any topic related to linguistic aspects of tone and intonation in any language, including, but not limited to:

Postdoctoral Research Assistant, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany Department of Anglophone Studies
The University of Duisburg-Essen, Faculty of Humanities; Department of Anglophone Studies, English Linguistics invites applications for a Postdoctoral research fellowship (50% post).
The postdoctoral fellow will join the newly created Sociolinguistics Lab at the University of Duisburg-Essen, which explores Variation and Change in the English Language.
The successful candidate will develop their own research agenda in the area of language variation and change / variationist sociolinguistics and be active in the advancement of ongoing research in the lab. The fellow will publish independent research as well as collaborate with members of the team in writing joint publications resulting from ongoing research. The postdoctoral fellow is expected to participate in applications for third party funding of new interdisciplinary research projects.
The fellow will teach one course per semester during his or her fellowship (a maximum of 2 h/week). The annual salary is based on spine point TV-L 13 (50%) on the German university salary scale.
Applicants should have a PhD degree in (English) Linguistics with a background in Variationist Sociolinguistics, Sociophonetics and/or Computational Linguistics. They are expected to have expertise in empirical methods, including the collection and analysis of linguistic data. The applicant must have a (near) native competence in English and should have experience in writing/managing research grants. No knowledge of German is required.
Applicants should include a statement of interest (letter of motivation), a description of the research you would like to pursue (5 pages max.), a CV including a list of publications, a copy of the PhD certificate, and the names and addresses of two referees. Applicants are also requested to provide two writing samples (i.e. chapters of the dissertation or academic papers)

The Department of Linguistics and Cognitive Science at the University of Delaware invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of phonetics and/or laboratory phonology. The position will commence September 1, 2018. The successful candidate will have a strong research program in phonetics and/or laboratory phonology and will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching.
