Hi Kayt,
Please see response from Solent University:
1. How do students register for modules?
At Solent, core modules are automatically assigned to a students curriculum on enrolment, where as optional units are selected through an Online options service which is made available to students in the previous academic session. Optional unit selection creates a planned curriculum which is then converted to an actual curriculum upon registration in the following academic session.
2. When does module registration open for students and what is the deadline for completion?
We run course registration and not module registration at the start of the academic year. Course registration is open at the beginning of August for returning students and in September for new students. The registration service is closed two weeks after the start of term.
Although our student record system does have the functionality to register students on modules, we do not currently use this -only where we are required to register students on individual trailing or repeat units.
Normally the online options service is open to students in March of the previous academic session. This selection creates a planned curriculum which converts to actual curriculum on enrolment the following session.
3. How do you support students with module choices?
Students are notified when the options service will go live, and in some cases, academic staff arrange briefing sessions with students.
· How do students find information about modules?
Briefing sessions with academics and also, the online options service has links to unit descriptors.
· Do you have a central module directory? If so, what information is included in this? Do you have a process to maintain the information to ensure accuracy?
No current module directory, but reports produced on request for checking each year.
· What kind of face to face support/guidance is given to students, if any? Who provides this support?
Academic school teams and Student records handle any queries with option selection.
4. What works well for you? Is there any good practice that you know that that you would recommend (or anything that you definitely wouldn’t!)?
Online option selection works well if units and course structures are known in advance. Late changes to structures can mean that updates to planned and actual student curriculums are required and this can cause difficulties.
Online option Service appears to work well.
Thanks in advance for any help, feel free to get in touch to discuss further.
Best wishes,
Kayt
