The Department of Politics and International Relations at Royal Holloway, University of London is looking for an external examiner for its postgraduate taught programmes for the period 2017-2018.
The external examiner will assist with the following programmes:
- Elections, Campaigns and Democracy (MSc)
- International Public Policy (MSc)
- International Relations (MSc)
- International Security Studies (MSc)
- Media, Power and Public Affairs (MSc)
- Politics (MSc)
- Politics of Development (MSc)
Several of these programmes have been introduced in the past two years, and are already growing in numbers.
A summary of the role includes
• assisting in the maintenance of the standard of awards of the College and the University as appropriate,
• to help ensure that the process of assessing students is fair and operated equitably, for example by advising on the appropriateness of marking schemes and moderating the marking of Internal Examiners
• attending Sub-boards of examiners (typically 2 per year) and complete an annual written report.
The External Examiner must not be
• any person currently or previously associated with the College as a student, member of staff, external validator unless a period of at least five years has elapsed since his/her association with the College ceased;
• any person who is or knows they will be in a position to influence significantly the future of students on the programme of study;
• any person significantly involved in recent or current substantive collaborative research activities with a member of staff clearly involved in the delivery, management or assessment of the programme(s) or course units in question;
The standard term of appointment for external examiners is four years. The term will commence in October 2017 and will run until the end of the 2020-21 academic year. All External Examiner appointments are subject to approval by the Executive Faculty Dean and will be made in accordance with the College's Regulations on Assessment.
The College pays an annual fee which is determined by on the basis of a banded structure accounting for the approximate number of students assessed by an examiner. The College will also reimburse reasonable expenses.
