Dear colleagues,
The National Archives (TNA) is pleased to announce the delivery of £660,000 of central government 'New Burdens' funding to 60 local authority places of deposit for taking in over 2000 linear metres of public records last year.
This is the second tranche of funding that has been made available to archive services which accession certain classes of public records under the 20-year rule programme.
Details of eligible public records accessions and New Burdens payments are available online: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/archives-sector/our-archives-sector-role/legislation/20-year-rule-and-records-of-local-interest/the-programme/
In 2015 legislative changes which introduced the new 20-year transfer point for public record transfers has required records created by certain public bodies to be transferred earlier than under the previous '30-year rule'. The ten-year transition phase for implementation affects around 1200 courts, NHS organisations and prisons around the country. TNA is annually surveying organisations to identify record holdings and transfers - responses for 2016 can be downloaded from our website: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/about/our-role/transparency/record-transfer-report-local-bodies/
We would like to thank archivists at places of deposit for their continued hard work in supporting 20-year rule implementation in their service.
Further information on TNA's 20 year rule programme for local transfers is available here http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/about/news/funding-for-local-authority-archives-for-taking-in-public-records/
