Dear MedSoc team,
Please could you circulate the following consultancy opportunity. Many
thanks!
Consultancy: Research assistant for AMR study in Egypt
This consultancy provides an exciting opportunity to work with an
international and interdisciplinary research team on antimicrobial
resistance (AMR) in Egypt. The post-holder will explore the perceptions and
priorities on AMR among local health-care professionals and government
officials, and trace the ‘lifecycle’ of AMR data that is generated in
routine clinical practice within the hospital and the wider health system.
There are currently increased efforts under way to build global AMR
surveillance systems. The project seeks to strengthen data on AMR in Egypt
and explore how global surveillance systems can usefully be linked into
local health systems.
The study is led by Dr Anne Roemer-Mahler from the Centre for Global Health
Policy at the University of Sussex (UK), Dr Leena Al-Hassan from the
Brighton and Sussex Medical School, and Dr Hayley MacGregor from the
Institute of Development Studies. The research assistant will be linked to
our partner institution, the National Cancer Institute in Cairo, where most
of the research will be conducted. The research assistant will be expected
to identify, collect and analyze documents on AMR and infection control at
the level of the hospital and the wider health system in Egypt, and conduct
interviews with clinicians, lab technicians, nurses and others working in
the health system. The research assistant will be expected to take a lead
role in collecting data and conducting literature reviews, with guidance
but without day-to-day supervision. S/he will be prepared to take a high
degree of responsibility for their own work. We will support the successful
candidate to achieve their academic goals and provide mentoring and
guidance on a regular basis and where needed. Furthermore, the research
assistant will receive training on the project and required methods skills
at the University of Sussex. The consultancy therefore provides an
opportunity to develop qualitative research skills through both training
and independent fieldwork.
Essential criteria:
- Fluency in Arabic and English;
- Extensive experience working in Egypt;
- Postgraduate degree in either infectious diseases/microbiology or
the social sciences;
- Interest in qualitative research or social science perspectives in
public health;
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to
communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Desirable criteria:
- Experience in qualitative research methods;
- Expertise in public health;
- Experience working in interdisciplinary teams.
This consultancy is available from September 2017 for 12 months, and the
consultancy fees will be EGP 6,000.
Applications should be made to Anne Roemer-Mahler (
