rethinking the workshop – workers’ education in the age of intelligent machines
22nd July 2017 at the Photographers’ Gallery, London.
How to educate photographers in a time of precarity, automation and change?
On Saturday July 22nd Adam Brown & Nicolas Maleve from the Centre for the Study of the Networked Image and will be co-hosting a workshop at the Photographers’ Gallery, London. We’ll be exploring ideas of work, making and creativity using computers, cameras, discussion and performance – and hoping to make a portrait of a contemporary ‘worker.’ In the process, we hope to open up discussions on education, the condition of work, agency and making. Who is the ‘creative worker’ at this point in time? Human or non-human? Present or absent? Paid, unpaid or ‘promising’? Visible or concealed?
Nicolas will be working with methods of machine learning – algorithm training, facial recognition – and Adam will be using studio photography and methods of online ‘making.’ The workshop would interest anyone with an interest in photographic education, and present a chance to rethink the vocational value of photographic practice, in a time of accelerating change.
